Mathematics

The mathematics faculty at St Clair High School consists of a dedicated staff who are constantly aiming to improve the learning outcome of students. We offer a range of different courses as part of the curriculum, as follows:-

Junior

Year 7 Classes are all mixed ability for the first two terms. During this time we assess them to determine the level at which students are working for placement in classes for terms 3 and 4. In terms 3 and 4 students who are performing particularly well are put into level 2 mathematics and those who are struggling are put into level 1 mathematics.

Year 8 Classes are a continuation from year 7, and students will either be working in a level 1 or a level 2 class. Students performance in Year 8 is used to determine at what level students will be placed in for year 9.

Year 9 Classes are split into 3 levels, level 3 being the highest.

Year 10 Is a continuation from year 9, where students will be working at one of three levels.

It must be noted that constant monitoring of student performance occurs such that students are placed in an appropriate class.

Senior

In year 11 we offer Mathematics General, Mathematics 2unit (advanced) and mathematics extension 1.

Mathematics 2unit and mathematics extension 1 should only be attempted by students who completed level 3 mathematics in year 10 successfully.

While mathematics General is the easier of the courses academically, it is still a rigorous course and students who do not need mathematics as a basis for their future endeavors and/or a struggling with mathematics, should seek advice before choosing this course.

In year 12 we offer an additional 2 courses: Applied mathematics and mathematics extension 2.

Applied mathematics is a board approved course that is developed for the students who successfully completed the preliminary general course but are more interested in practical applications of mathematics in everyday life. This course does not contribute to a UAI.

The extension 2 mathematics course is designed for those students who are coping quite well with mathematics extension 1 and are looking for a further challenge that will assist them in university courses that are heavily mathematically based.
